Privacy Policy for FlowState

Last Updated: June 2026

FlowState ("we", "our", or "us") is designed as a local-first focus and productivity utility. We are deeply committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy details our practices regarding data collection, storage, and the specific system permissions utilized by the FlowState mobile application.

No Internet Transmission: FlowState operates entirely offline. The application does not declare or use the Android Internet permission. We do not collect, transmit, upload, or store any of your personal data, app usage history, or browsing activity on external servers. All operations are calculated and stored locally on your device.

1. Prominent Disclosures & Sensitive Permissions

To provide core app-blocking and usage-tracking features, FlowState requests the following sensitive Android permissions:

A. Usage Access (UsageStatsManager)

We request access to your device's usage statistics to query and calculate the time you spend on different applications throughout the day. This data is displayed in your daily/weekly analytics dashboard and is compared against your set limits to trigger blocks. This data is kept strictly inside the application's local sandbox.

B. Query All Packages (QUERY_ALL_PACKAGES)

We request permission to query the list of all installed applications on your device. This is necessary to populate the App Picker within your settings, enabling you to select and configure custom blocking limits for specific applications. This device inventory data is queried and processed 100% locally on your device and is never shared, uploaded, or transmitted.

C. Foreground Service (FOREGROUND_SERVICE_SPECIAL_USE)

We utilize a persistent background service (AppMonitoringForegroundService of type specialUse) to track active focus boundaries. This service monitors the foreground active application status in real-time when the screen is active to evaluate if your set limits are exceeded. It maintains a user-perceptible notification in the status bar to remain visible to the user and prevent the Android OS from terminating the tracking/blocking engine when system resources are low.

D. Display Over Other Apps (SYSTEM_ALERT_WINDOW)

This permission is used to render the full-screen Compose overlay when a media player or picture-in-picture session bypasses regular activity blocking. It displays the blocking layout over restricted content locally on your screen and intercepts input to prevent interaction with the locked app.

E. Post Notifications

This permission is required on Android 13+ to display the persistent notification linked to the running Foreground Service, ensuring you are always aware when focus tracking and blocking are active.

F. Request Ignore Battery Optimizations

This permission is used to exempt FlowState from system-wide battery saving restrictions. It ensures that the background focus tracking service is not suspended or terminated by the Android operating system during idle periods, maintaining tracking and blocking reliability.

2. Local Data Storage

All application configurations, blocked app limits, web blacklist configurations, and reconstructed usage sessions are stored locally on your device in a secure SQLite (Room) database. No external entity, including ourselves, has access to this database.

3. Data Deletion & Management

You have full control over your recorded statistics. Inside the app settings, you can choose to:

4. Third-Party Libraries & Services

We do not integrate any third-party analytics trackers, advertising SDKs, or cloud synchronization services. No tracking libraries are included in our software.

5. Children's Privacy

Our application does not collect information from anyone, including children under the age of 13. Since no data is transmitted or stored online, parents can rest assured that no data is collected from their children.
